Betting tips for England vs Senegal: World Cup preview and odds – The Telegraph

Our expert backs Harry Maguire to score at any time in his betting tips for England’s World Cup round-of-16 clash with Senegal on Sunday
England take on Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday in the first meeting between the countries.
The Three Lions have enjoyed a rollercoaster campaign, beating Iran 6-2 in their opener before a stalemate with the United States and a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales.
Gareth Southgate’s side are the overwhelming favourites to progress to the quarter-finals and play either France or Poland, but Senegal are not to be discounted.
The Lions of Teranga won the Africa Cup of Nations this year and have recovered from an opening 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands by beating hosts Qatar 3-1 and an impressive Ecuador side 2-1.
Even so, England appear to have the advantage on paper and should come through what looks to be an intriguing contest.

All England fans would love Gareth Southgate’s side to fly out of the traps and dominate Senegal as they did against Iran and in the second half against Wales.
However, international football, especially in the knockout rounds of major tournaments, is not like that and it could be slow going on Sunday, at least initially.
Senegal are a good team, coming through a decent Group A to make the last 16, and they continue the form they showed to win their maiden Africa Cup of Nations crown this year.
The absence of Sadio Mane is a blow, but coach Aliou Cisse has experience to fall back on, especially at the back, with the trio of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and central defenders Kalidou Koulibaly and Abdou Diallo rightly earning respect.
That said, the Lions of Teranga have yet to keep a clean sheet in Qatar and always seem to give their opponents a chance.
With England’s attacking riches, there are sure to be opportunities and Southgate’s side should have enough to book their place in the last eight.
Tip: England/over 2.5 goals @ 17/10 with Betfred
It is no secret that Harry Maguire has struggled for Manchester United over the past 18 months, even losing his place in the starting XI.
However, give him an England shirt and he rewinds the clock to the summers of 2018 and 2021 when he was imperious. Maguire hit the woodwork against Iran and was England’s best player against the United States.
After another decent showing in the Wales match, the 29-year-old appears to be regaining his confidence and his aerial prowess could pay dividends.
Senegal have conceded twice from headers in Qatar, while Ecuador’s goal on Tuesday came from a poorly defended corner.
They could be vulnerable from set pieces and Maguire offers value as he continues on his road to redemption.
Tip: Harry Maguire to score at any time @ 9/1 with Betfred
Senegal will be without Idrissa Gueye for the match in Al Khor after the experienced Everton man picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against Ecuador.
Their disciplinary record has been quite good in Qatar, collectively receiving only six yellows over their three Group A games.
However, with more at stake in the knockout rounds, players can become a bit more desperate and are more prone to attracting the referee’s attention.
Cisse’s side received four yellow cards in their Africa Cup of Nations final success against Egypt in February and it could be a similar story in Al Khor.
Tip: Senegal team total cards – over 2.5 @ 6/4 with Betfred

England head into the match with a fully fit squad at their disposal after James Maddison returned to training. Ben White has left the camp for personal reasons and will not be returning.
England predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham; Rashford, Foden, Saka; Kane.
Gueye is out of the fixture and will serve a one-match suspension after he picked up his second booking of the tournament against Ecuador. Reading’s Mamadou Loum is expected to replace him.
Senegal predicted line-up (4-3-2-1): E Mendy; Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs; Ciss, P Gueye; Loum; Ndiaye, Sarr; Dia.
