Messaging from Caesars Maryland indicates that the sportsbook app will be open for business in the state on Wednesday, Nov. 23.
On Tuesday, Caesars made its mobile sports betting app available for download in Maryland. Users can register, deposit funds, and opt-in to bonus offers, but cannot place bets as of yet.
State officials have not formally announced a launch date, but in a statement released Nov. 14, the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency revealed that they would select a launch date following a Nov. 16 meeting by the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC).
“The eagerly awaited launch of mobile sports wagering in Maryland may take place in time for Thanksgiving.” the release said.
Perhaps tipping its hand, Caesars posted a message on its sportsbook app in Maryland teasing launch day. It reads “Your app is almost ready, Maryland. Betting starts November 23rd.”
Caesars Maryland is one of 1o applicants that will have its license application considered by SWARC in Wednesday’s meeting.
Caesars is entering the Maryland sports betting market via a partnership with Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, located in downtown and featuring a 122,000-square-foot gaming floor. Caesars will offer its popular sportsbook app to customers in Maryland for iOS and Android devices. Caesars has had a retail sportsbook at Horseshoe Casino since December 2021. Users can make cash deposits at the retail sportsbook to fund their future Caesars mobile sports betting.
Maryland legalized online sports betting in 2021, and has been working toward a statewide launch date. Officials from the MLGC have indicated that they wish to do so before the end of 2022.
Maryland would like to see a regulated online sports betting market before the NFL gets to the final weeks of the season. Football betting is the most popular for sports bettors in the U.S., and Maryland is home to two NFL teams and Maryland Terrapins athletics. Through it’s relationship with Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Caesars is a sports betting partner of the Baltimore Ravens.
MARYLAND SPORTSBOOK APPS: Picking a Sportsbook with the Best Bonus
The MLGC has revealed that a soft launch will be necessary before the state authorizes the launch of sportsbooks for the public in Maryland. This process, albeit in different forms, has been followed in other states that have debuted online sports betting.
In Wednesday’s meeting, it’s expected that SWARC will grant gaming licenses to some or all of the 10 sports operators on the agenda. Those include Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, and others. Operators are required to pay $500,000 for a sports betting gaming license in the Old Line State. Both online and retail sportsbooks will be levied a 15% tax on adjusted gross revenue. Tax revenue from sports betting is earmarked for the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which will fund programs for early childhood and public schools in the state.
SWARC announced that 10 sports betting operators will be considered at the Nov. 16 meeting:
The Caesars license will be held under CZR Maryland Mobile Opportunity LLC, a holding company owned by Caesars for the purpose of operating in the state. Assuming it’s approved, Maryland will be the 16th state where Caesars mobile sportsbook will be available, joining Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, and also Washington D.C.
