PayPal misinformation policy sparks backlash, many users delete app – USA TODAY

Searches for how to “delete PayPal” skyrocketed by nearly 1,400% worldwide after the payment service released a policy update that said users would have to pay up to $2,500 in damages for spreading misinformation — which the company has since called an error.
An analysis by news portal Financial World found that Google searches spiked for both “delete PayPal” and “cancel PayPal” earlier this week as the tech company faced intense backlash over the updated terms of agreement.
PayPal published a new Acceptable Use Policy that would prohibit “the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials” that “promote misinformation,” starting Nov. 3, conservative outlets reported
PayPal soon backtracked and said the policy update was an error.
“An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) notice recently went out in error that included incorrect information. PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy. We’re sorry for the confusion this has caused,” a PayPal spokesperson said in a statement.

The policy misfire, however, resulted in intense blowback, with hashtags like #PayPalCancelled trending on Twitter. The company’s stock went down after news of the policy update.
Former PayPal President David Marcus, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and several Republican figureheads criticized the policy on social media.
“It’s hard for me to openly criticize a company I used to love and gave so much to. But @PayPal’s new AUP goes against everything I believe in,” Marcus tweeted on Saturday. “A private company now gets to decide to take your money if you say something they disagree with. Insanity.”
